The Basil H. Alkazzi Award for Excellence in Painting
The Basil H. Alkazzi Award for Excellence in Painting provides two painters with an award of $20,000 each. Basil Alkazzi has established the awards in order to recognize and encourage the work of all painters, because as he says: “Created works of art are in fact the tangible manifestations of man’s highest aspirations- to create a sort of ultimate beauty and to visually express all intangible and elusive elements.”

The application deadline has passed. This year's award winners are Mary Temple and Bruce Pearson. See the press release to the right for more information.

The Award is open to painters of all nationalities, provided they are residents of New York State. All those who apply to NYFA’s Artist Fellowship Program in Painting will automatically be considered for The Basil H. Alkazzi Award for Excellence in Painting. The two winners will be selected by Basil Alkazzi himself, along with his co-judge the American Curator Lowery Stoke Sims. The awards will first be present in 2010 and on a biennial basis thereafter.

About Basil Alkazzi
The British artist is a prolific and, in his own words, a “compulsive” painter. His distinguished career as an artist spans almost 50 years. Six monographs of work have been published, the most recent being Resonant Echoes – The Art of Basil Alkazzi by Dennis Wepman in 2007. His work is held in the public collections of museums worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Hirshorn Museum – Smithsonian Institute in Washington, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, Santa Barbara Museum, California, The Tel-Aviv Museum of Art in Israel, The National Council in Kuwait, and Centrum Sztuki in Warsaw, Poland. In addition to being a gifted painter, Mr. Basil Alkazzi is also a generous philanthropist. In 1986, he established The Basil H. Alkazzi Foundation Awards, which are presented annually at the Royal College of Art in London. A cosmopolitan, he has traveled widely for long periods of time, and has lived in London, Athens, and New York. He currently resides in Monaco.
